Two Great Portable Dishwashers

This article summarizes the key feature and price differences between the Bosch Integra, Evolution and Ascenta dishwasher product lines. We've organized our findings by grouping related features together in order to simplify the presentation.

Since Bosch manufactures primarly 24" under counter dishwashers,  we included the following representative models in our analysis:

Appearance

All Bosch models feature a stainless steel tall tub compartment, although the lower priced Acenta models include a type of glass fiber composite material called polinex.  The most significant difference between the Integra and Evolution models is whether the controls are visible on the front door (Evolution) or concealed on the door edge (Integra).  Ascenta models come in both concealed and visible control configurations. While largely a matter of personal preference, more and more people prefer the less busy look of concealed controls.  Expect to pay a slight premium for this capability. On some Bosch models, the controls are concealed, but there is a visible LED so you can see how much cycle item is remaining. If you want to fit custom panels on your dishwasher, you'll have to step up to the Integra 800 Plus series.  None of the Bosch dishwasher models are ADA compliant as your powerful portable items.

Space/Capacity

As you would expect from a premium dishwasher, Bosch Integra and Evolution models include 14 place setting capacity and adjustable racks to accommodate washing dishes and pans of differing heights.  The Rackmatic adjustment feature allows you to adjust the height of the top rack even when it is full.  The top of the line Integra 800 Plus has a 15 place setting capacity and a third flatware mezzanine rack that slides in on top of the upper rack.  Ascenta models have a 12 place setting capacity and use a different rack adjustment mechanism.

Energy Use

While all Bosch models are Energy Star certified, the top of the line Integra and Evolution models use less energy and water than the less expensive models.  All Bosch models incorporate a sensor technology called EcoSense which monitors water quality and temperature during the wash cycle in order to minimize the amount of fresh water used. In addition, Bosch's specially designed Flow-Through Water Heater lessens the amount of energy necessary to heat the water supply.  Our models had the following energy usage statistics:

It is worth noting that a big difference in modern dishwasher technology is that manufacturers such as Bosch have developed advanced energy sensing technologies designed to reduce the amount of water and electricity that is used for each cycle.  Compared to older, less energy efficient appliances, these newer dishwashers sometimes have longer wash cycle times in order to reduce energy consumption.  Homeowners who last purchased a dishwasher more than 15 years ago are frequently disappointed by the longer wash cycle times of the newer technology.

Features

Most Bosch models are NSF certified, meaning that they support high temperature washing designed to kill bacteria.  Most models also feature SaniDry, Bosch's term for their condensation drying system and OptiDry, Bosch's rinse aid monitoring system.  The main feature differences between the lower and upper end of the Integra and Evolution series are the number of cycles, options and timer delay choices.  The Evolution and Integra 800 models feature up to 6 cycles (Power Scrub Plus, Auto, Delicate, Regular, Quick Wash and Glass Care) and up to 4 options (Half Load, Extra Dry Heat, EcoAction, Sanitize).  The corresponding 300 and 500 series models include 4 or 5 cycles and 2 or 3 options.  The Ascenta series models sport 4 cycles (Power Scrub Plus, Auto, Regular, Quick Wash)and 2 options (Half Load, Extra Dry Heat).  All models feature a Half Load option which allow you to run less than full loads, using less water.

Noise Level

Bosch is almost legendary for the quietness of their dishwashers.  Their most quiet top of the line Evolution and Integra dishwasher models produce as few as 40 decibels of noise (about the level of a whisper in a library).  Ironically, some users complain that models with concealed conrols are so quiet that they can't tell whether the wash cycle is finished.   As a result, Bosch added a light beam feature that shines on the floor so that customers can tell when the load is done.  This low level of noise output is accomplished by incorporating noise dampening materials, an almost vibrationless pump design and the use of a filter system instead of a grinder for managing food particle waste.  Most Bosch models range in noise output from 47-53 decibels.

Safety

To guard against damage caused by water leaks, Bosch installs their AquaStop Leak Protection system, which uses sensors to monitor for leaks.  When a leak is detected, the dishwasher automatically stops running.  Most models except some of the Integra series dishwashers include some form of child protection feature to minimize the chances of inadvertently opening the door during a wash cycle.
